Do you want to start with Pokémon card sales via CardmarketBut don't you know where to start? For this interview we talked to EpicCards, a seller who is now fully active in the sale and purchase of Pokémon cards through Cardmarket and Marketplace.
They share their experiences, mistakes and practical tips for novice sellers.
How did EpicCards develop?
Can you briefly imagine and tell yourself how EpicCards originated?
EpicCards originated when we, Dusty Dobbe and Milan van Kampen, decided in August to join forces and start a business together. What started out as an idea for an extra penny, quickly grew into a serious company in which we are active daily with import and sale via platforms such as Cardmarket and Marketplace.
How to start selling Pokémon cards via Cardmarket?
How did you start selling through Cardmarket?
We both started selling individually on Cardmarket to earn an extra pocket penny next to our job. We both had our own account, but in August, after discussing the idea, we decided to create EpicCards. Since then, we have both worked full-time to provide the best possible service and to improve our processes.
What was your first investment?
What was your first investment / starting point?
Our first real purchase came through an acquaintance of our then work. He wanted to get rid of his cards, which was a perfect opportunity for us to start. They included cards from sets like Crown Zenith and Evolving Skies, which were very popular at the time. As a result we immediately had a strong start and our listings immediately got a lot of attention. In addition, we both had maps from the period we sold individually, which we could also build with.
What else would you do if you started over?
What else would you do if you started over now?
One of our first major purchases was a vintage collection of cards from sets such as Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket, ranging from Poor to Near Mint and in both Dutch and English. Although at first glance this seemed like a nice deal, we soon noticed that these cards sell less quickly than cards from popular, recent sets. As a result, we were stuck to our stock longer and could grow less quickly. With the knowledge of today we would therefore make a different start by focusing more on current and desired sets. These provide more traffic to your listings and make it possible to rotate and grow faster.
What do you make money on Cardmarket?
What do you make most of it? (singles, sealed, bulk, etc.)
Because we started at a time when sealed products were scarce, it is difficult for us to arrive here consistently, let alone with a healthy margin. That is why we have focused on purchasing and selling singles since the beginning. Here lies most of our revenue and profits, partly because singles rotate faster and can be priced more flexibly.
How do you determine prices on Cardmarket?
How to determine prices on Cardmarket?
We first look at the state of the map. Cards with damage are obviously lower in value than cards in Near Mint or Mint condition. Then we compare our cards to other providers on Cardmarket who offer the same card in a similar condition. On that basis we determine a competitive price, where we continuously find a good balance between speed of sale and maintaining a healthy margin.
Tips for beginners who want to sell Pokémon cards
Do you have tips for beginners who want to start selling?
First of all, make sure your service is in order, that's the basis of everything. When customers have a good experience ordering from you, they come back faster and build confidence.Think of clear product descriptions, fair and competitive prices, fast shipping and good, safe packaging. These are all factors that directly affect your reputation as a seller.
Common errors in vendors
What are common mistakes you often see?
What is particularly striking to us is that cards are not sufficiently protected and/or sent too slowly. We also see that communication sometimes takes too long or is unclear. This can soon lead to buyers dropping out and choosing to order from another seller who does respond quickly and clearly.
Shipment and Risk Selling Cardmarket
How do you handle shipping and risk (damage/claims)?
Of course, shipments may get lost or damaged during transport. Therefore we always send orders with a value above €150.In addition, we always think along with the customer in the event of damage or claims and together we look for a suitable solution. This way you try not only to solve problems, but also to maintain customer confidence.
Is Pokémon selling still profitable in 2026?
Is Pokémon selling still profitable in 2026?
Sure, as long as you make the right deals and get there soon. The market has become more competitive, so it is increasingly about smart buying, timing and efficient working. If you handle that properly, it can still be absolutely profitable.
Future of the Pokémon market
How do you look at the future of the market?
We are very positive when we talk about the future of the market. Pokémon continues to release new sets, which continuously creates new opportunities. In addition, Pokémon is currently more popular than ever before, which ensures that demand for cards and products will remain strong for the time being.
Best deal and biggest mistake
What's the best deal you've ever made?
This just happened to be pretty recent. At the beginning of the release of Ascended Heroes we had bought a Pikachu ex 276 for about €300. Meanwhile, this card is worth €1000+, which makes it one of our best deals so far.
What's the biggest mistake you've ever made?
Every seller comes into contact with fake cards sooner or later, and this happened to us too. This was a purchase through Marketplace without buyer protection. When we found out the cards were fake, we tried to contact the seller, but there was no response. This was an expensive lesson and something that we're looking forward to now.
Collecting vs investing
What do you think of the current trend between collecting vs investing?
In our opinion collecting is done mainly by people who are really fan of Pokémon. Of course there are also investors who are a fan of the hobby, but we also increasingly see people getting in purely for the purpose of making profits. That difference is becoming increasingly visible within the community.
